The house has a bean-to-cup coffee machine, the Melitta® CAFFEO® SOLO®. It grinds fresh beans for every cup. Here is how it works, what its symbols mean and what helps when something goes wrong.
Summarised from Melitta's official operating instructions; the sources are at the bottom. If none of this helps, please let our house manager know.
01
What is where
The numbers are those of figure A in Melitta's manual. The letters show what is behind the parts.
A schematic drawing to the dimensions in the manual (20 × 45.5 × 32.5 cm). Not every detail matches the machine in the house.
02
Making coffee
Four steps the first time. After that it is usually two: put a cup down, press a button.
Fill the water
Fold up the lid of the water tank, lift the tank out and fill it to the max. mark with fresh, cold, still water. Fresh every day is best.
Fill the beans
Take the lid off the bean container and pour in whole beans, ideally espresso or bean-to-cup beans. No ground coffee, and no glazed, caramelised or sugared beans.
Switch on
Put a cup under the outlet and press On/Off. The machine heats up and rinses briefly with hot water while the ready symbol flashes. When it stays lit, the machine is ready.
Make the coffee
Slide the outlet to the height of the cup. Choose the strength with the bean button (1 mild, 2 normal, 3 strong) and the amount with the dial (30 to 220 ml). Then press one cup or two cups. The machine stops by itself; pressing again cancels.
Hot. Coffee, water and steam at the outlet are very hot. Keep children under 8 away from the machine and its cable, and do not reach into the appliance while it is running.
All symbols only faintly lit? After a few minutes without use the machine goes into energy-saving mode. One press of the bean button wakes it up. After a longer pause it switches itself off completely; then simply switch it on again.
Too much or too little? The quantity dial can also be turned while the coffee is running: to the left for less, to the right for more.
03
What is lit?
The machine has no error codes: it shows with symbols what it needs. Tap “lit” or “flashing” next to a symbol to see it in the picture.
3 quantity dial · 4 one cup · 5 two cups · 8 coffee strength · 9 display · 10 on/off. Schematic: the order of the symbols on the machine may differ.

Keeping it clean
Two everyday jobs and one a week. The machine does the rest with its programmes.
When needed
Empty the drip tray and the grounds container
At the latest when the float sticks up out of the cup plate or the symbol is lit. Pull both out to the front together, empty them, rinse them and put them back.
The drip tray does not go in the dishwasher, it warps. The grounds container may.
Wipe the outside
With a soft, damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid, without scouring agents. Unplug it first; never put the appliance in water and do not use a steam cleaner.
Once a week
Rinse the brewing unit
1Cover off2Hold the button, turn the handle3Pull it out
Switch the machine off. Reach into the recess on the right-hand side and pull the cover off to the right.
Press and hold the red button on the handle of the brewing unit and turn the handle clockwise as far as it goes (about 75°).
Pull the brewing unit out by the handle without twisting its parts. Rinse it on all sides under running water, never in the dishwasher, and let it drip dry. Remove coffee residue from inside the machine.
Put it back, hold the red button and turn the handle anticlockwise as far as it goes. Hook the cover in at the back and swing it to the left until it clicks into place.
The care programmes
The machine says itself when it is time. If one of these symbols lights up during your stay, please let our house manager know. You can also start the programmes yourself if the products for them are in the house.
Only use Melitta® PERFECT CLEAN cleaning tabs for bean-to-cup machines. Rinse the brewing unit first (see above).
Switch the machine off. Fill the water tank to the max. mark and put it in.
Press one cup and On/Off together for about 3 seconds. The cleaning symbol flashes and the drip tray symbol lights up.
Empty the drip tray and the grounds container. Put the drip tray in without the grounds container and place the grounds container under the outlet.
Phase 1 Two rinses. When the ready symbol lights up: take the brewing unit out (only at this moment), put a cleaning tab in it, put it back and lock it.
Phase 2 When the water symbol lights up: fill the water tank to max., slide the outlet all the way down and press the bean button. About 5 minutes.
Phase 3 When the drip tray symbol lights up: empty the drip tray and the grounds container, put the drip tray back without the grounds container and place the grounds container under the outlet.
Phase 4 The middle bean flashes, about 5 minutes. When the drip tray symbol lights up: empty both and put them back as normal. Done.
Descaling programme, step by step
Only Melitta® ANTI CALC, never vinegar or other descalers. Descaler can irritate the skin: follow the instructions and amounts on the pack.
Switch the machine off and take out the water filter, if one is fitted.
Press two cups and On/Off together for about 3 seconds. The descaling symbol flashes and the drip tray symbol lights up.
Phase 1 Empty the drip tray and put it back. Empty the water tank completely, add descaler as the pack says, put the tank in and press the bean button. About 15 minutes.
Phase 2 When the drip tray symbol lights up: empty it and put it back. Rinse the water tank thoroughly, fill it to max. with fresh water, put it in and press the bean button. About 5 minutes.
Phase 3 When the drip tray symbol lights up: empty it and put it back. When the ready symbol lights up, it is done. Put the filter back in.
If a programme was interrupted, for example by a power cut, the machine rinses by itself. Follow the instructions on the display.
Changing the water filter
Stand the new filter in a glass of tap water for a few minutes.
Switch the machine off. Press the bean button and On/Off for about 3 seconds and let go. The drip tray symbol appears.
Empty the drip tray and put it back. Take the water tank out and empty it, screw the filter into the thread at the bottom, fill to max. and put the tank in.
Press the bean button: the machine rinses. Then empty the drip tray. The first water may be cloudy; that is activated carbon from the filter.
In the current manual the filter is called Melitta® PRO AQUA, in the older one Melitta® Claris®. With a filter, the water hardness sets itself to level 1.
Steaming out before a long break
Take out the water filter, if one is fitted, and keep it cool in a glass of tap water.
Switch the machine on. Press one cup and On/Off for about 2 seconds. The ready symbol flashes, then the water symbol lights up.
Pull the water tank out and empty it, then press the bean button. The machine steams out and switches itself off. Put the water tank back.
Changing the settings
With the machine on, press one cup and two cups together for more than 2 seconds, until the ready symbol flashes. Then choose the menu with one cup, the value with the bean button (the beans show it) and confirm with On/Off.

When something goes wrong
The problems from Melitta's table, with the cause and what helps. Read first, then act: most are fixed in a minute.
The coffee only comes out in drips
Cause
The grind is too fine.
What helps
Set the grind coarser (only while the grinder is running), rinse the brewing unit, and if need be run the descaling or cleaning programme.
No coffee comes out at all
Cause
The water tank is empty or not seated properly.
What helps
Fill it and push it firmly into place.
Cause
The brewing unit is clogged.
What helps
Rinse the brewing unit (see Care).
The grinder does not grind, or it is unusually loud
Cause
The beans do not slide down, often with very oily beans.
What helps
Tap the bean container lightly.
Cause
Something foreign in the grinder.
What helps
Do not reach in yourself. Switch the machine off and let our house manager know.
The beans flash although there are beans in the container
Cause
Not enough ground coffee reached the brewing chamber.
What helps
Press “one cup” or “two cups” once more.
The water symbol is lit although the tank is full
Cause
The float in the water tank is stuck.
What helps
Take the tank out, pour the water away, shake the tank gently, fill it again and put it back.
The air-in-the-system symbol is lit
Cause
There is air in the pipes inside the machine.
What helps
Fill the water tank and press the bean button: the pump vents the system, and then the machine is ready again.
The brewing unit will not go back in
Cause
It is not locked properly.
What helps
Check that the handle has clicked into place.
Cause
The drive is not in the right position.
What helps
Switch off and on again, then press “one cup” and “two cups” together for more than 2 seconds: the drive moves into position. Then put the brewing unit in and check that it is locked.
Cleaning and ready flash in turn
Cause
The brewing unit is missing or not seated properly.
What helps
Put it in properly and lock it.
Cause
The brewing chamber is overfull.
What helps
Switch off and on again with On/Off, several times if needed, until it shows ready.
On older machines the same thing looks like this: the one-cup and two-cup buttons flash in turn with the On/Off button.
Cleaning or descaling was interrupted
Cause
The power went off, for example in a power cut.
What helps
The machine rinses by itself next time. Follow the instructions on the display.
All buttons flash one after another
Cause
A system fault.
What helps
Switch off and on again with On/Off. If that does not help, let our house manager know: the appliance then has to go to the service.
Never repair it yourself. Do not open screwed covers and do not use a damaged cable: only Melitta's service or an authorised workshop may repair it. We arrange that.
